First illustrated edition, the original dating from 1848, 30 illustrations and 200 full-page vignettes in text Tony Johannot. Copy of first edition by Carteret page 338 is rated 348, and the title vignette represents Paturot nightcap. Cartonnage gilt black editor for special shoes. Full percaline embossed frames and large cold plate on upper cover with Phrygian caps and the figure of Napoleon had center. Back bearing a special plate. Back cover with Jerome Paturot nightcap. Gilt edges. Copy almost free of foxing (except on the title page and rarely on serpentes and margins inset) and a paper outlining a perfect freshness. Cardboard editor in superb condition (light smear the corners, caps). Very nice copy. The character originally appeared Paturot Jerome in Jerome Paturot looking for a social position in 1846; to the incredible success of his satyr Reybaud tried to experience new painting this time the republic in 1848; Paturot is the man of all arrivismes whose fervor alone is to live in the state. Satyr of the whole society and power, we will see the future Napoleon III wearing a stuffed eagle. Illustrating Johannot is one of the best contributions to Romantic illustrated book. Precious copy in an ideal condition.
