First edition

William SHAKESPEARE & Amédée PICHOT Galerie des personnages de Shakespeare

William SHAKESPEARE & Amédée PICHOT

Galerie des personnages de Shakespeare

Baudry, librairie européenne, Paris 1849, grand in 8 (26x17cm), relié.

First edition illustrated with 80 out text. Each piece has an engraving on steel and wood. The names on the engravings are Geofffroy, Verdeil, Rouargue, Harvey, but most beautiful steels and fine, the often wild imagination, are not signed.
Blue Cardboard editor in full percaline with golden motifs, ornate back of a geometric tracery and foliage on a large flat romantic coaching cold and two different reasons, a representative Falstaff and the other with a composition a lyre, a medal ... A slightly emerged slip.
Very nice copy, to the Immaculate paper, free of foxing.
This edition is a pearl of romantic illustration. The quality of steel is often astounding. After Old Nick preface and two frontispieces, one for Shakespeare, the other for his characters, each piece is presented and commented by Amédée Pichot, engravings illustrating a passage of a room. The text which refers engraving is printed in English and French.
