New edition. 79 Illustrations by Riou and De Montaut including a map on double page.
Publisher cardboard says "The initials" tan color. First printing in this cartonnage, and this new decor after the editions to "bouquets of roses". Charles Magnier bookbinder at the bottom of the back. Second plate type Magnier C1 with Greek inside the rosette in black and black circles delimiting the different crowns.
Beautiful first board. Back very well to the headdresses rubbed with tiny gaps. Second flat very well with a thin scraped area. The 2 corners of the second flat slightly rubbed and folded. Percaline of the lower bit in cut tail. Volume very homogeneous and solid. Scattered burns.
Nice copy.
Five Weeks in Balloon is Verne's first novel edited by Hetzel. The novel establishes a good summary of Africa's knowledge, which was then largely unknown to the public. Verne develops the elements of his future work, cleverly combining the narrative of adventures and scientific and technical information. An explorer and his friend hunter fly over East Africa, from Zanzibar to the sources of the Nile, regions almost unexplored until then.
