Jules VERNE Les enfants du capitaine Grant

Jules VERNE

Les enfants du capitaine Grant

Hetzel, Paris 1903, Grd. in-8 (19x28cm), 620pp., relié.

Hetzel, Paris 1903, 8° (19x28cm), 620pp, bound.
New edition illustrated with 172 drawings by Riou, engraved by Pannemaker.
Publisher's cloth binding 'A la mappemonde', spine 'à l'ancre'. Gilt upper cover in outstanding condition, bearing Engel's signature in the anchor motif. Dark marks to the left and right of the world map.
Spine in good condition, with softened but not crooked spine-ends, slightly faded. Back cover 'type i'.
This spine has the peculiarity of having a lower part pasted on. Could be one of the first spines decorated with the anchor motif, made with a pasted piece on the lower part of the spine, like first cloth bindings with the gilt globe motif; However, this binding with the world map is not at its first attempt, it has been thinned (the first ones too bulky and heavy were deformed) and the spine is more harmonious, losing its large red band. This publisher's binding was short-lived and was used on only three titles: Les enfants du capitaine Grant, L'Ile mystérieuse and Matthias Sandorf.
Lower cover in perfect condition. Corners well pointed, slightly rubbed. A snag on the inner edge of the second board on 8mn. Edges perfect. Shiny cloth. A very fresh copy, without any foxing, very rare in this condition.
One of the great classics of the author, two children go in search of their shipwrecked father. The novel takes the reader from Scotland to New Zealand, passing through the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, the Magellan Strait, the Andes Mountains, the Argentinean pampas, the Cape of Good Hope, Amsterdam Island, and Australia.
