Mathias Sandorf is posthumously dedicated to Alexandre Dumas. Jules Verne pays tribute in this novel to the author of the Count of Monte Cristo ("In this book, I tried to make Matthias Sandorf the Monte Cristo Extraordinary Voyages."); Sandorf was like him imprisoned and betrayed and his adventures will retrace his revenge. The novel takes place on the Mediterranean rim of southern Europe.
