This edition is a slightly modified impression of the first illustrated edition of 1685. The illustration consists of 2 frontispieces and 58 half-page vignettes designed by Romeyn de Hooghe (except the second frontispiece which is not in the edition of 1685). "The frontispiece of the first volume is that of 1685 returned, without signature.The date and the name of the bookseller have been removed.The frontispiece of the 2nd flight is a new composition without signature.The vignettes are those of 1685, returned and engraved with a certain finesse ". Hédé-Haüy, p. 13. It is therefore not a reissue, the figures having been engraved again and reversed. This particularity is all the interest of this new edition, different from the first.
Binding full morocco olive green bronze contemporary. Back with ornate nerves. title label in red morocco. Triple framing net on the boards. Golden slices. Inland frieze. Paper uniformly yellowed.
Very nice copy, very rare in vintage green morocco.
