New edition, after the original from 1771, illustrated with 2 frontispieces by Blanchard.
Half brown sheepskin bindings of the time. Smooth back decorated with 2 irons and 2 grotesque boxes. Black morocco title and number pieces. A slot at the head of volume I. Traces of friction. Bottom corner of the title page of volume I, frayed, with missing text.
The Sacrifices of Love are a counterpart in the author's work to his most famous novel The Woes of Inconsistency (1772). Epistolary novel, genre particularly prized at the time and which lends itself perfectly to the exchange of love. We are witnessing Madame de Senanges's attempts to seduce Versenai, a libertine. Before the pressing maneuvers of the seducer and the heroic resistance of his victim will emerge a paradoxical conclusion based precisely on sacrifice.
