Deluxe copy, one of 20 numbered copies on China paper, No. 11, with frontispiece in triple state by Lalauze. Original wrappers preserved. Contemporary half blue shagreen binding. Spine with raised bands richly decorated and with mosaic work. Gilt titles and date at foot. Fillets on boards. Top edge gilt. Spine uniformly sunned, turned green. 3 raised bands lightly rubbed. Handsome copy nevertheless. Epistolary novel partly autobiographical, published with Chateaubriand's help, which was described as a "little masterpiece" by Sainte-Beuve. It enjoyed great success in French and German literary circles.
