The first first edition was published in 1688, two other editions will follow, conforming to the first. This seventh edition, which can be considered as the fifth first edition, has many additions. Title page red and black.
Binding full brown sheepskin contemporary. Back to nerves adorned. Title piece in tobacco morocco. A crack in the head. Upper joint tightly split on a box. A blunt corner.
The characters of La Bruyère were a dynamic work, constantly moving. While the first edition emphasizes the translation of Théophraste's Characters, the editions from the fourth of 1689 will include many additions, so the fourth (first edition to be completed) has 764 remarks against 420 in the first the seventh we propose will have 1073 compared to the original 420.
