First printing of this beautiful edition of the plays of Corneille by Voltaire, illustrated with 34 figures by Plover and engraved by Baquoy Lemire, Lempereur, of Longueuil, and a frontispiece by Peter, engraved by Watelet. It is pursued not only for his comments but for illustration of Voltaire.
Full speckled calf Empire Doll signed, in the "Back to Egypt" style. Smooth back adorned with an iron oil lamp repeated three times, and another of a lion standing double tail; lace, threads and golden dotted, golden eagles, wings, along with rats, snakes, rabbits and deer coaching flat, geometric lace coaching contreplats, golden wheels on cuts and caps garlands. All slices browned. Light foxing around the edges of some endpapers. Friction on the dishes. Some rubbed caps, caps two partially missing. Few scuffs and wormholes.
Fine copy in a binder Empire. With Bozérian and Thouvenin, Doll is one of the major bookbinders period 1790 - 1830.
"Nice edition that Voltaire had printed by subscription in Cramer brothers in Geneva, accompanying comments, to endow a descendant of the great Corneille, he had collected. All over Europe took part "(Henry Cohen: Guide book lover with engravings of the eighteenth century, 255). The two famous names of Corneille and Voltaire waved across Europe to consider the names of the subscribers, starting with the King of France himself.
