First printing of this very famous edition established by Bret. Illustrated book of the famous portrait of Molière engraved by Cathelin after Mignaud frontispiece of the first volume, 6 flagship titles and 33 very fine figures of Moreau Le Jeune. Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful editions of Molière, "The following figures of Moreau is one of the most esteemed" (Cohen, 717). Title pages in red and black.
Binders in full icy blond calf vintage. Smooth backs richly adorned with boxes. Title and volume coins in Havana morocco. Golden roulette on the cups. Triple golden fillets framing the boards. Inner lace.
Very nice set pleasantly established in a rich Contemporary binding.
This edition, much sought after for the quality of its illustration (Moreau was with Cochin one of the most expensive illustrators of his time) is also for the correction of the text that we owe to the ardor of Bret; this one has indeed carefully revised the texts according to the first editions; notes and comments, witnesses of his work are no less interesting, and make this edition one of the jewels among those of Molière.
