Starets Silouan better known under the name of Silouan the Athonite (1866-1936) was a Russian monk saint of the Orthodox Church, who lived in the St. Panteleimon Monastery on Mount Athos from 1892 to his death. Mount Athos, "Holy Mountain" to the twenty monasteries is still forbidden to women and female animals. The "avaton 'or ban on women entering Mount Athos - which extends to all female animals except cats - the date of an order of the Byzantine Emperor Constantine Monomakh 1046.
