Of Swann and the shadow of blossoming girls
W hen L 1913, Marcel Proust looking for a publisher for the first part of its Search of Lost Time, he thinks of course of the NRF Gallimard, which although founded in 1911 is already the most prestigious publishing house in France .
André Gide, one of the founders of the NRF, then director of the responsible peer selecting manuscripts for publication.
The myth is that it is directly behind the refusal of Proust's manuscript, arguing that he read a few pages grunt in which the narrator eats over several pages, cookies and drinking herbal tea (it s' is the now famous episode of the madeleine).
Marcel Proust turns to other publishers as Fasquelle without more success, then concludes with Bernard Grasset an author account to publication, that is to say with Proust costs.
It is in these terms of savings that is printing the first copies of Du côté de chez Swann, to the dismay of Marcel Proust who finds all the faults of the first copies. So he stopped quickly to correct the impression the shells of his work.

It is these shortcomings that now distinguish the first following the draw. Even the 17 major papers (5 Japan and Holland 12) are printed later after correcting typos.

Blame Stifle: It is the most important shell, one of the three essential elements that define the first draw, namely the typographical bar "| "That has crept between the E and T Grasset bottom of the title page.

The colophon page 524, at the back of the last page of text: The colophon is always dated November 8, 1913, but after the first run; Proust did add a table of contents. The last page of text has been reprinted without the colophon which then found the back of the table of contents page 528.

The catalog of the publisher: this small catalog of releases Grasset green on gray paper is present only in the first runs and was removed in subsequent editions.

Coverage on the date 1913: While all the title pages have been printed with the date 1914 (in anticipation of a release in early 1914), it appears that the impression was faster than expected and Proust had precipitated the release of his book (probably for a chance to win a literary prize awarded by year-end). The covers are printed after the body of the work, they focused for a time, the word "1913" and then after a few runs, the "1914" reference. This element is less important, since most copies have coverage on the date of 1913.

No edition statement on the cover: More frequent mention a so-called "shadow" of 2nd or 3rd edition was printed on some blankets to sell these copies after the first drawings elapsed. The editor, by signing this statement, wanted to believe that he had to reprint the book sold following its success, so it is always in the first edition. Best with this fictitious mention however strongly impaired.

The editor of deception which is called "dummy edition mention" or "publishing false statement" was used at the time in several publishing house.

1918: buyout of unsold and relisting undercover Gallimard: With the publication of Du cote de chez Swann, André Gide realizes his error of assessment and wrote a long letter to Proust to apologize for having refused and to try to publish other volumes Gallimard.
Gallimard thus redeems Grasset unsold properties Du Swann (220 copies), removes the covers of Grasset and replace them with blankets NRF called "relisting", it sticks on the title page a label on behalf of the French Nouvelle Revue (NRF) and puts on sale in 1917. from this Swann with the new covers and the label on the title page.

In the shadow of blossoming girls:
Because of the war, the second volume will be published in 1918 and obtain the Prix Goncourt, for all the great novels of the time recounting the tragedy of 14-18.
Winning the Prix Goncourt has the peculiarity of systematically result in a second edition, often in the same year as the original. The first thing to check out a copy is the colophon: November 30, 1918.
He was shot 64 copies in major papers (in a larger format called "reimposed") of this edition, which is still small compared to the importance that will acquire the work of Marcel Proust.
Apart from these major papers, which are a rarity badge, bibliophiles will distinguish a first printing of the edition statement without blankets and a second printing blankets with a fake edition statement.
As rare as Swann first draw, Shadow girls without mention had to be printed about 500 copies (2000 copies have the following fictitious mention on the cover). Many bibliophiles therefore merely one copy with the cover (under the title) a "fictional" words that can go from the second to the fifth edition.

Following the search:
Success is therefore assured, Gallimard now print for future volumes, two major papers: one reimposed (that is to say in quarto) printed on laid paper to about 100, and a second printed on vellum Pur paper yarn about 1,000 copies. Bibliophiles will be able to finally obtain the Proust works on fine paper. The current paper edition does not, for these volumes of bibliophile interest.

In summary, there are at least three types of prestigious collections of In Search of Lost Time:

One is to bring together the best in reimposed quarto.

In this collection, the two main concerns are:
- The difficulty of finding the shadow of young girls in flower reimposed because its price is excessive.
- And especially the lack of size reimposed for the original edition of From Swann.
For this collection remains attractive, it must sacrifice the original edition of the first volume by replacing the Gallimard edition reimposed Swann published in 1919.

The second collection is purely bibliophile. She is to meet the original editions first draw for the first volumes and pure vellum wire for the following. The difficulty, besides that of the first two volumes, is finding editions vellum Pur Fil in a beautiful state, which is not often the case.

The third collection is historical. She is to meet the original editions from favoring their handwritten dedication by the author.
Always unique, autographed copy carries with it the history of the work and its author. The importance of the dedicatee, his intimacy with the author and his connection with the work itself, make the book autographed a unique witness to the creation of the work.
The greatest challenge is to find an autographed copy of the first volume (before Proust has acquired its fame) and, if possible, "meaning" dedication, that is to say a dedicatee having an important link the author and his work.

Quelle serait la valeur d'un des 220 exemplaires du Coté de chez Swann rachetés par Gallimard à Grasset et portant la nouvelle couverture et la contre étiquette de la NRF ?
