Original French translation of the last manuscript recovered from a deportee assigned to the Sonderkommandos.

Marcel Nadjary (1917-1971), a Greek Jew from Thessaloniki, deported to Auschwitz in the spring of 1944, was assigned to the Sonderkommando. He wrote a letter to dear friends to bid them farewell and describe the horrific work he was forced to carry out. He then buried his clandestine manuscript in the soil of Birkenau. This document was recovered thirty-six years later, on October 24, 1980.

This testimony, written at "the epicenter of the catastrophe," is published here for the first time in French translation, together with a second manuscript that Marcel Nadjary wrote in 1947 to preserve a record of his experience at the heart of the Birkenau inferno.

Texts by Serge Klarsfeld, Nelly Nadjary, Alberto Nadjary, Fragiski Ampatzopoulou, Georges Didi-Huberman, Tal Bruttmann, Loïc Marcou, and Andreas Kilian accompany and illuminate these two exceptional documents.

The journal continued publication until March 1910 (no. 63), cf. BnF - Catalogue collectif des périodiques, vol. II, p. 537.

Contemporary half marbled calf with corners, smooth spine decorated with two gilt ermines, red morocco lettering piece laid horizontally, gilt fillet borders on marbled paper boards, hand-marbled endpapers and paste-downs, some original wrappers preserved, corners slightly bumped, minor rubbing.

A manuscript note in black ink at the head of the volume states: "Unique series printed on coloured papers, specially made for Dr J. Marly". Each issue is printed on a double leaf except for no. 7 (3 leaves), no. 20 for Christmas 1906 which comprises 6 pages and two wrappers (the first illustrated in two colours and signed H. Gélèbart, December 1907), no. 28 which includes an additional leaf (musical score of a song by Rennes students dedicated to the local police and titled "Saint-Eloi"), and no. 37 for Christmas 1907 which comprises 5 pages and two wrappers (the first printed in green). The wrappers for no. 20 are also mounted at the beginning and end of the volume.

Head of vol. 2 lightly rubbed.

Copy belonging to Charles Péguy’s collaborator André Bourgeois, administrator of the Cahiers de la quinzaine (literary magazine which published this novel). It exceptionally contains valuable bound-in manuscript notes by Romain Rolland and Péguy.

This exceedingly rare set in first edition is handsomely bound by the great René Kieffer. It contains every volume issued on deluxe paper - these being "deuxième exemplaire de souche", i.e. name copies of the administrator after Charles Péguy's copy and before the printer's.

Half cherry morocco binding, spine lightly faded and raised on five bands, a few rubs to the spine, marbled paper sides, comb-marbled endpapers and pastedowns, gilt top edge, a period binding signed by Petit, successor to Simier.

Robert de Clari (c. 1170 – after 1216) was a Picard knight, vassal to the castellan Pierre d’Amiens.

He took part in the Fourth Crusade alongside his lord Pierre d’Amiens. After the deaths in 1205 of his direct suzerains Pierre d’Amiens and Hugues IV de Campdavaine, Count of Saint-Pol, he returned swiftly to Picardy.

From the sack of Constantinople he brought back, among other things, relics which he donated to the abbey of Corbie. He then composed, in French and in Picard, La Conquête de Constantinople, a narrative in one hundred and twenty chapters recounting the Fourth Crusade and its immediate aftermath up to 1216.

He therefore died sometime after this date, though nothing further is known about him.

These “memoirs-autobiography” by Simone de Beauvoir trace her life from her success at the agrégation prepared with Jean-Paul Sartre to the Liberation of Paris in August 1944.
