Edition gathering numerous unpublished texts by several authors: Marceline Desbordes-Valmore, Jules Janin, Charles Nodier, Schiller, etc.
Strictly contemporary Romantic binding in full cherry calf, spine with four raised bands decorated with gilt and blind fillets, blind fleurons, a gilt arabesque at center, gilt dentelles at head and foot, boards framed with a black fillet, a wide floral dentelle stamped in blind and gilt corner ornaments, gilt dentelle framing the doublures, headcaps and board edges highlighted with gilt roulette, all edges gilt.
The work is illustrated with eight plates after T. Lawrence, J. Boaden, J. Wood, J. Martin, E. F. Pastorini, J. Hayes, J. P. Davis, engraved by W. Greatbach, C. Marr, Ch. Rolls, E. J. Roberts, W. Ensom, J. W. Cook, T. A. Dean.
The keepsake, known in the English book tradition from the 1820s onward, enjoyed great success and was imitated in France from the 1830s. The French collections, as our edition demonstrates, reproduced the English engravings and texts. These publications provided opportunities for collaboration by numerous French writers: Balzac, Nodier, Dumas, Jules Janin, Hugo, and Mérimée. They offered women the opportunity to publish numerous sentimental novellas.
