First editions, stated the second edition for the second volume on butterflies.
Publisher's half red shagreen over cloth boards, spine in five compartments with gilt fillets, publisher's name in gilt to foot, double blindruled fillet frame to covers.
A rare complete set of this handsome publication with a total of more than 1,000 vignettes in text and complete with 122 woodcut plates hors texte of innumerable specimens, most heightened and protected with silk guards: 48 , 50 (49 heightened, 1 in sepia as frontispiece, included in the pagination) and 24 (partly heightened and gummed).
Volume III is more specifically concerned with orthoptera, neuroptera, hymenoptera and so forth, and shows the insects in their natural environment.
