Rarissime photographie originale sur papier albuminé, au format carte de visite, contrecollée sur un carton.
En bas dans la marge : Erwin. 4 rue Frochot, Paris.
Liszt eut plusieurs fois au cours de son existence des crises mystiques, se réfugiant après des ruptures amoureuse dans des lectures pieuses et des méditations religieuses. A 20 ans, le jeune musicien songe à devenir prêtre, mais son père le convainc de renoncer. Cette volonté de finir en martyr dans une vie pieuse et retirée ne va pas sans un certain romantisme, même si elle répond à une sérieuse tendance à l'austérité et au dépouillement que l'on retrouvera dans le oeuvres de la seconde partie de sa vie. En 1865, à la grande surprise de son entourage, il reçoit les ordres mineurs à Rome. Le compositeur peut désormais porter la soutane, ce qui en vérité ne le change guère des redingotes noires qu'il aimait porter. Ce tournant dans la vie de Liszt correspondant à une volonté du musicien-compositeur de renoncer à sa carrière de star, aux concerts événements et à la lisztomania qui envahit l'Europe. Par ses contradictions, ses combats, sa ferveur, son oeuvre, Liszt est l'archétype de l'artiste romantique, il n'en existe pas de plus brillant modèle.
De retour à Paris après avoir reçu les ordres mineur, Liszt se fit faire une soutane à sa façon, par un tailleur, et c'est une soutane de dandy et certes pas celle d'un abbé ordinaire. La séance de pose chez Erwin Hanfstaengl est la première où Liszt posa en tenue d'abbé, dans un désir de se monter autre, différent du pianiste star idolâtré des femmes.
Le musée Carnavalet de Paris possède un cliché différent de la séance de pose chez Erwin Hanfstaengl. On le voit de profil, tenant le même missel à la main. Le cliché est de moindre qualité.
