First edition, published posthumously. Full calf porphyry slightly later. Smooth back adorned with grotesque. Part of title morocco mint. Gold caps on wheels. Yellow sections. Light snags on the edge, two corners bumped. Back with very slight traces of minor friction. Few foxing mainly affecting the very first and last leaves. Elegant binding. Essays on painting follow the show of 1765 Diderot wrote to Grimm's request for Literary Correspondence and are of a more theoretical content; these tests clarify Diderot's aesthetics by addressing different parts of the painting: drawing, color, chiaroscuro, expression and composition. The work had a decisive influence on German aesthetic thought and was translated by Goethe in 1799, winning the votes of Schelling and Schiller.
