First edition, rare. There exist two impressions of the first edition: one with the word "soldiers" on the title, written with a lowercase s, the back is white, and the other with the letter S capital, and on the back two sonnets "Fortune Virtue" Virtue and the Fortune. "Our copy belongs to the second version. The first edition also includes the feature to include French and Latin text of the Parallel Caesar and Henry the Great printed in Roman characters . (p.470 to 488 of Volume I), which distinguishes it from counterfeiting and subsequent editions where it is printed in italics However, some are inclined to recognize in this second version and not a counterfeit original second issue; we would know also that 2 or 3 copies of the rare true first edition printed privately at the Chateau de Sully by a printer of Angers. Grande title vignette embellished with green and red on the two title pages contained the three virtues ( faith, virtue, charity) crowned with amaranth. Full calf blond contemporary. Back tooled raised florets 6. Double Net framework on plats.spine-end tail torn off. Upper joint split open the head and tail. 2 missing on the top plate due to worms. 2 corners bare. Various spots. Copy costs. After the assassination of King Henry IV, Sully retired to his castle to write his memoirs of 1612 to 1617 which were established to glorify the action of the king; these memories remain a great source for the history of time. It was followed by two other volumes published posthumously in 1662, it is noted on the first flyleaf in pencil. Certainly This book comes from the library of Bishop Simony and was given to him by Madame de Sully. Bishop S. being the tutor of young Maximilien de Sully, died very young and last name. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.
