Original French edition, apparently translated from the German edition of 1792, and full of two double-page maps of Africa and Asia.
Binding in full brown contemporary sheepskin. Smooth back with fillets and finials. title label in red calfskin. Rubbed together. Faded gold. Caps removed.
The author, botanist, spent 15 months in Japan as a surgeon of the Dutch Company stationed in Deshima and Nagasaki. The description of commercial, political, religious, and linguistic life is one of the first and most important about Japan. Many anecdotes are very precious, like paper making, card games, makeup, education, cleanliness, prostitutes ... The first part of the trip is the description of the discovery of South Africa (with many remarks on plants), from Batavia, then from the island of Java. Japanese vocabulary in fine.
