Chez Jean-Baptiste Charmet, Besançon 1730 - 1735, In 4 (18x24,5cm), (2) xxvj 298pp. xvj 179pp. (1bc) (22) cxij et (4) xix (1) 635pp. (1bc.) (21), relié.

Rare first edition of the two volumes published respectively in 1730 and 1735 make up the history of the county of Burgundy. A third volume, published in 1740, which is rarely met the first two deals with the nobility and the counts of Burgundy and its political organization.
Both volumes are illustrated with 11 plates, including a map of Besançon, a panoramic map brochure of the same city, a folding map of Besançon séquanoises provinces ... The history of the church has a half-title with a new paging. It is possible that there was a false title before the title page entitled History of the County of Burgundy, half-title found on the second volume, but nothing is certain.
Binding in full mottled calf time. Back finely and richly decorated nerves, especially iron to the crown of France repeated in each box and the room volume number. Roulette tail leaping horse. Part of title and volume number morocco beige with foliage framing the volume number. Head cover of Volume I partly broken. Small accidents tail of Volume I. partly head cover threadbare in Volume II, fragile tail accidents (lower jaw open tail). A corner wearing a lack of leather trim. The folding board a Roman triumphal arch carries a tear and a former track brown scotch. Despite the many cited defects, copy looks good, the highly decorative back and also costs much.
The Séquanois were the ancient people of Franche-Comté, and perhaps part of Switzerland (it was bounded on the north by the Vosges), it was probably a large province, one of the most powerful in Gaul, the Burgundians settled there around the fifth century, a county of Burgundy was born at X century. A chapter is devoted to the history of the Church of Besançon and its main abbeys. The second volume deals with the history of the county of Burgundy, until the advent of the first dukes, and the history of the kingdom of Burgundy (intertwined with the history of the Frankish dynasty). This excellent history of Burgundy is distinguished not only by his erudition but also by the clarity of his style and of its development, it redoubles any previously written history as its starting assumptions are individuals.
