John MILTON

Le paradis terrestre. Poeme imité de Milton par Madame D. B. *** [Ensemble] Adam et Eve, tragedie nouvelle. Imitée de Milton

S.n. ; Chez Pierre Mortier, à Londres; à Amsterdam 1748 - 1742, In 8 (13,5x22cm), vj, 121pp. ; (8) 73pp., relié.

First edition of this translation from the pen of Madame Du Boccage. It is illustrated with a frontispiece engraved by Louise D, a vignette title Durand and 6 header Plover, engraved by Louise D. (Louise de Montigny). Adam and Eve is illustrated with a title vignette by Cochin. Translation or adaptation, is also the work of Madame Du Boccage. Full brown calf marbled period. Back tooled raised 4 irons canvas. Part of title in red morocco. Highly rounded corners and outer rim stripped a priori adaptation to Madame Du Boccage seems far removed from the original, and especially shortened. One may also wonder about the title change adopted by the translator, where the core concept of the work is lost Milton. Curiosity.
