Publisher's binding in full red percaline, smooth back adorned with a golden allegory, framing of nets and cold garlands on the plates.
False title page and last guard entirely shaded, three small black spots on the back and at the head of the first cover, otherwise a pleasant complete copy of its two insert inserts on China.
Introduction and notes by Georges Monval, note on the first editions of the work and the life of Jean-François Rameau by Ernest Thoinan.
This edition of 1891, although late, must be considered as the only true first edition due to the fact that it is the first time that the copy of the manuscript of Denis Diderot has been printed in full and faithfully.
Since then, it has also served as a reference for the various modern editions of "Neveu de Rameau".
Indeed, the first edition of Rameau's Neveu is the translation, into German, established by Goethe in 1805 from which a first French version was born, in 1821 at Delaunay, completely betraying the thought of Denis Diderot and not being than a retranslation of Goethe's work.
Finally, in 1823, a more complete version of "Neveu de Rameau" was printed from a manuscript from the Vandeul collection (but this manuscript is only a copy and probably a copy of a copy).
This edition is still considered by some bibliographers as the true first edition of this text.
We can therefore consider, rightly and reasonably, and after all these editorial twists and turns, that our 1891 edition is the best and the most faithful to the spirit of the author, which can be found among the three editions. "original" of this important text that is "Rameau's nephew".
