First edition

Victor HUGO Les misérables

Victor HUGO

Les misérables

Pagnerre, Paris 1862, in-8 (14,5x23cm), 10 volumes reliés.

Parisian first edition published three days after that of Brussels. False mention of eighth edition for the first 6 volumes, the last 4, ie volumes 7 to 10 without any mention.
Binding in half shagreen red leathery contemporary. Back to nerves decorated with fatty and lean fillets, golden and cold. All fine, free from freckles. Some blunt corners, the others rubbed. Beautiful series pleasantly bound.
In order to make a point on the various judgments of the bibliographers: While Vicaire indicates that the French edition is the true original, Clouzot affirming that the two are original, we must specify that the Belgian edition was published three days before (the 31 March for Brussels and April 3 for Paris), but the truth is not due to a history of date. Lacroix is the publisher of Hugo, Pagnerre is only the depositary in Paris, which explains the presence of the name of Lacroix behind the half-title, together with that of Lacroix. We also know that the work was to appear in all the major capitals at the same time, which happened within a few days. For the question of the mentions, this is probably quite simple: for commercial reasons of cost, we made a single print, some with mentions, others not, in order to distribute them during the year as if each time , these were new editions. We can understand Clouzot saying that an edition without mention is more desirable, because it seems to have been earlier, but in fact, and to sell, when the title pages without mention have been exhausted, these pages have been sold out of order with mention or not, and we very often composed copies bearing different mentions (the composition of our copy shows it well, without mention and eighth for the first 6), it is however true that the copies without mention were the first ones put in sale, and that the editions with mention have title pages in red and black, to make them appear as new editions.
