First edition

Victor HUGO Notre-Dame de Paris

Victor HUGO

Notre-Dame de Paris

Eugène Renduel, Paris 1836, in-8, 631pp., relié.

First edition illustrated in first edition and in one volume; there will be a draw in 3 volumes, more common and slightly later. A frontispiece title and 10 hors-texte on steel (presence of serpentes on cream paper) printed on applied chine of Johannot, Boulanger, Raffet, Rogier & Rouargue engraved by Finden, Staines ... (another draw of the engravings on vellum is seen in other copies, less valuable). It is well printed in an airy typography with large margins, and close to the original published in 1831. The board "The utility of windows" is missing as in all copies of any first issue according to Clouzot. This plate was indeed not ready at the time of printing, and the first volumes, especially in publisher's bindings, were thus sold without the board that could be inserted later.
Publisher's binding in full icy brown calf era said "At the cathedral".
Beautiful and rare copy in romantic Contemporary binding.
