First edition

Victor HUGO Notre-Dame de Paris

Victor HUGO

Notre-Dame de Paris

Eugène Renduel, Paris 1836, In-8 (14x21,2cm), 631pp., relié.

First edition illustrated in first edition and in one volume; there will indeed be a reprint in 2 volumes, then in 3, more current and slightly later. A frontispiece title and 11 hors-texte on steel (presence of serpentes on cream paper) printed on strong paper of Johannot, Boulanger, Raffet, Rogier & Rouargue engraved by Finden, Staines ... It is well printed in a large aerated typography margins, and close to the original published in 1831. The plate "The utility of windows" is present; it is often missing according to Clouzot because it has benefited from a later draw.
Binding in full red shagreen of time. Back with nerves adorned with nets and wheels on the nerves. Hot-dipped boards of a large golden iron of floral ornamentation, with triple golden net and cold fat framing. Inland frieze. Golden slices. White moiré guards (dirt on the contreplats). A lack of the upper joint in the head, and slot of the upper joint on 1 cm; a discreet lack of tail A slightly blunted corner. A micro cut in the lead. Small frictions without consequence, more visible on a nerve. Scattered burns. The planks have remained very clean and contain their snakes.
Beautiful and rare copy in romantic Contemporary binding. Notre-Dame de Paris, like all the great novels of the time, remains very rare in full Contemporary binding.
