First french edition, translated by Teodor de Wyzewa. The title pages do not bear any mention, on the other hand the covers bear a false mention of the fourteenth edition for the first volume, and the third for the second.
Binding half morocco beige contemporary. Back to Jansenist nerves. Title and golden tomaison. Golden slices. Back darkens evenly. Some traces of friction. Good copies, with the wrappers preserved and bound in, but without the back cover and the back.
The novel, masterpiece written in 1899, was 11 times adapted for the cinema and as early as 1909 by DW Griffith. It brings together all the author's thoughts on justice, power, men and love. A man who possesses everything will give his life to a woman sentenced to prison, embodying a Christ figure to redeem her own life and that of all men.
