After Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto appeared in 1764, The Old English Baron is the second Gothic novel of literature, and the author, Clara Reeve writes in her preface: "This story is the literary product of the Castle of Otranto , written on the same plane, with a motive which unites the most attractive and interesting circumstances of the old and modern novels, while assuming a character and a proper manner, which differs from the two; the name of a Gothic history, which is an image of Gothic times and morals. "These two first novels gave birth to an important literary stream in England, which had repercussions in France as well as in Germany.
