Victor HUGO Notre-Dame de Paris

Victor HUGO

Notre-Dame de Paris

Furne et Cie, Paris 1840, In-8 (15,5x23cm), 369pp. et 426pp., 2 tomes en 2 volumes reliés.

Reprint of the edition called Keepsake published by Renduel in 1836 and part of the complete works also; the complete edition was carried out over several years and buyers thus chose the works they wanted to possess, this principle will be applied for the first collective edition of 1836 as for reissues. Furne had bought the bookstore Renduel and quickly exploited the bottom. The illustration contains a portrait of young Hugo frontispiece, two title vignettes and 11 steel engravings printed on strong paper by Johannot, Boulanger, Raffet, Rogier & Rouargue engraved by Finden, Staines ... (The snakes have been removed) . It is well printed in an open typography with large margins, and close to the original published in 1831.
Binding semi-chagrin lie-de-vin vintage signed Forest in the tail of the volume 1. Smooth back decorated with a rock plate, cold nets and small florets. Filets of separation on the boards. Black chagrined paper on boards with cold foliage. Friction. Back evenly thinned. Some scattered foxinges, 2 browned planks. Good copy, with beautifully decorative backs.
