MOLIERE Oeuvres

Oeuvres

Paulin, Paris 1836, Grd. in 8 (17,5x26,5cm), 768pp. et 895pp., 2 volumes reliés.

Edition illustrated by Tony Johanot, a frontispiece, an engraved title and 800 vignettes engraved on wood (header, headbands, cul-de-lamp). Notice by Sainte Beuve. First printing.
Binding in full veal glazed noisette of time. Smooth backs richly adorned with mirrored rocailles irons. Titles and golden tones. Cold-shaved boards of a central diamond with various textures, a central rectangle with florets in the spots, and a large frieze framing, as well as a golden net. Marbled slices. Unsigned master binder. The boards are affected by a trace of wetting, the leather being now darker there. Various friction. Small scattered fissures, mainly in margins. A very narrow slit at the head of the lower joint of volume 1, not very visible, extends over a third of the bit. A small trace of pale moisture of 0.5 to 1 cm along the outer margin, without any gravity. The paper is white except some yellow notebooks at the end of volume 2. Despite some defects, beautiful copy in a rare binding.
This book is particularly rare in full romantic binding, the velvet being the leather of choice of the bindings of that time.
One of the most beautiful books illustrated by Johannot, with the Don Quixote and one of the jewels of the romantic illustration.
"Very beautiful book, rare in good condition and very well regarded for its admirable illustration ..." Carteret.
