Silvio PELLICO

Mes prisons suivies du discours sur les devoirs des hommes

Delahaye, Paris 1843, In-8 (18,5x26,5cm), 374pp., relié.

First illustrated with a frontispiece on China and 25 inset and many vignettes by Tony Johanot. Beautiful illustrated romantic.
Editor binding in full red shagreen with special irons. Back richly adorned with a large ornamental plaque in length, the name of the editor in tail. Upper dish with a special plate depicting the author chained, large horseshoes framing frames, cold nets. Lower plate decorated with a large central iron and irons framing. Inland frieze. Golden slices. Guards of white moire silk. Back to the golds a little faded, if not small scattered foxinges, mainly on the sheets of guard and at the beginning, then in the margins. Small brown spots on the lower dish.
Very nice copy in its rich publisher binding.
My prisons are the memories of a man imprisoned by arbitrary power. In the wake of the Neapolitan and Piedmontese revolution against the Austrian occupation, all the personalities of which Silvio Pellico was imprisoned for ten years in Spielberg in Moravia. The text had once published a very large success due to its stake character, Pellico having found hope only through the Catholic religion. The book also contains poems.
