Michel de MONTAIGNE Les essais

Michel de MONTAIGNE

Les essais

Alphonse Lemerre, Paris 1872-1900, 12,5x20,5cm, 5 volumes reliés.

New edition, one of the few copies on Holland paper which he makes no mention.
Binders half navy blue morocco, back with five nerves decorated with gilded initials of great bibliophile Roger Cormenin repeated five times, golden dates tails, marbled paper plates, guards and contreplats of handmade paper, heads gilded, elegant binding slightly posterior and unsigned.
Instructions on the life and works of Michel de Montaigne, literature study, variants, notes, tables and glossary by Ernest Courbet and Charles Royer.
Provenance: the library Cormenin Roger, son of Louis de Cormenin who was the confidant and secretary of Theophile Gautier and also a close friend of Gustave Flaubert.
Pleasant complete copy in five volumes (the fifth volume often lacking with regard to the fact that it appeared almost thirty years after the first volume) and beautifully prepared.
