(4) 80pp. (4) 189pp., 5 volumes reliés.

First edition of this anthology, called Code of Barbin because records that are part were drafted by François Barbin, son of the bookseller. However, the choice of poems was done, it seems, by Fontenelle. This valuable collection is the first to accord importance to the poets of the Middle Ages, which is then a great novelty. It includes nearly 1045 pieces due to fifty different authors: Villon, Marot, Saint Gelais, Du Bellay, Ronsard, Regnier, Malherbe, Racan, Brébeuf, Adam Billaut, Car, Scarron, Benserade, etc. A third of these pieces were only published in earlier collections.
XIXth Binders full red morocco decorated Du Seuil, signed Quinet. Back with five nerves ornate. Encadres boards sextuple golden nets and gilt spandrels into florets. Double net gilded on the cuts and caps. Large gold lace framing of contreplats. All edges gilt.
