Recueil des plus belles pièces des poëtes françois, tant anciens que modernes, depuis Villon jusqu'à M. de Benserade

par La Compagnie des libraires, Paris 1692, in-12 (8x13,5cm), (20) 48pp. ; (6) 183pp. (1) ; (6) 181-307p. et (6) 386pp. et (4) 384pp. et (6) 420pp. et (8) 160pp. ; (4) 80pp. ; (4) 189pp., 5 volumes reliés.

Famous anthology of poetry, known as the Recueil de Barbin because the notices which belong to it are said to have been composed by François Barbin, son of the bookseller. This precious collection was the first to give an important place to poets of the Middle Ages, which was a great novelty at the time.
Binding in full speckled and glazed brown calf of time. Ornate nerved back. Piece of brown calf title, piece of brown sheepskin number. Head caps torn from volume 1 to 4. Tail cap of volume 1 partially torn off. Frictions. 3 blunt corners.
From the library of Ludovic Halevy. Ex libris engraved. Handwritten notes pasted on a cover page of volume I.
The choice of poems seems to have been made by Fontenelle. The collection brings together almost 1,045 pieces due to some fifty different authors: Villon, Marot, Saint-Gelais, du Bellay, Ronsard, Régnier, Racan, Bréboeuf, Billaut ... Only a third of these pieces had appeared in collections earlier.
