Reprinting the third edition given by Raphael du Petit Val in 1600. The six comedies appeared first time in Paris, at the Angelier in 1579; the second, Lyon, was published in 1597 by Rigaud.
Binding post (XIX) in full morocco rosewood signed Thompson. Back with five nerves Jansenist. Lining fawn morocco frame made of gilded nets and rollers with small iron at the corners. All edges gilt.
Born in Champagne where trading had led his parents, Pierre Larivey playwright (1541-1619) belonged to the great Florentine family of Giunti. His first six comedies in this collection, titled The Lackeys, The Widow, The Spirits, The moped, and The Jealous The Escoliers are free versions of Italian pieces. Three others followed in 1611: The Constance, The Faithful and The Deceptions. Having influenced Molière - Severin's monologue in Spirits, directly inspired soliloquy Scrooge weeping over his casket in The Miser - and Regnard, it is considered the creator of the comic prose in France.
Old handwritten bookplate on the title, virtually cleared. Green paper label with handwritten ratings of the nineteenth century unidentified.
