August REMY Dessin de sainte Catherine

August REMY (1800-1872)

Dessin de sainte Catherine

1825, 15,5x20cm, Dessin.

Original drawing in pencil representing St. Catherine of Alexandria ( St. Katharina ), bust, haloed and crowned, holding a pen, a sign of her erudition. The naked wheel, the instrument of his martyrdom, is divined under the hands of the saint. Signed in the lower right corner A. Remy invi and disi, and left Roma, 1825 . Frame fine and worked, beaded with frame of palmettes, gilded wood of time. Glossed on paper, on the back of which is a color engraving of the Duomo of Milan. Made in a style of medieval inspiration in vogue in the nineteenth century in Italy, with soft features, hair slightly wavy, and mouth tainted. The author, August Remy, born in 1800 and died in 1872, is famous for his numerous lithographs, and stayed in Italy from 1821 to 1826, where he realized this Saint Catherine. Known for his portraits and historical and religious subjects, he was present in post-Napoleonic art circles, before taking up a post as professor at the Berlin Academy in 1827.
