Portrait du comte d'Ingenheim

Wilhelm HENSEL

Portrait du comte d'Ingenheim

Rome circa. 1825, 14x16,5cm, une feuille sous marie-louise.

Portrait in pencil of Count Gustav Adolf Wilhelm of Ingenheim (1789-1855).
Drawing by Wilhelm Hensel, Prussian portraitist, during his trip to Rome between 1823 and 1828. Strongly influenced by Italian painting, Hensel copied Raphael's works extensively during his stay in Rome and also painted portraits of the European aristocracy residing in Rome.
Son of William II of Prussia, the Count of Ingenheim was a great lover of art and an avid collector. He stayed several times in Italy between 1822 and 1833 and took part in the acquisition of Italian works of art for the Royal Museum of Berlin (today Altes Museum ) which was born under the reign of his half-brother, Frédéric -Guillaume III. He holds art fairs in Rome and Berlin, and supports painters and scholars (including the German archaeologist Eduard Gerhard), making use of his relations with the Prussian crown. He has maintained and promoted young painters of the post-Napoleonic era, such as Johann Erdmann Hummel, Aloys Hirt, Christian Daniel Rauch and Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
