Second edition of this monumental work of historiography.
The collation of the text volumes (74 steel-engraved plates) conforms to the list of plates given in volume XX (with the exception of the plate depicting the French before Moscow, which is lacking), but does not match the plate count of the first edition, as certain plates were not reissued. The atlas corresponds to that of the first edition and is complete with its 66 maps.
Some foxing, mainly affecting the edges.
Handsome bindings of red half morocco with corners, the spines with five raised bands and triple blind-ruled compartments, a few minor abrasions without consequence to three spines, marbled paper sides, comb-marbled endpapers and pastedowns, gilt top edges, for the 21 text volumes; and a contemporary binding of red half sheep for the atlas, the smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets and tools, a few black marks to the spine, red paper-covered boards lightly soiled at the margins, corners rubbed.
Composite edition combining seven volumes from the very first collected edition with others from various reissues published between 1836 and 1852. Volumes 15 to 30 (1839-1852) each include an engraved title with a vignette and two illustrated plates; the earlier editions, covering volumes 1 to 15 (1830-1836) did not contain illustrations.
Half polished calf bindings in Restoration style. Smooth spines decorated with a central panel richly gilt in grotesque design, gilt and blind-tooled motifs at head and foot of spine, also ruled in gilt. Small tear to the spine-ends of volumes 5 and 9. Volumes 25 and 26 show some surface loss to the leather on the boards.
A handsome set.

Scott's great dark novels have obscured the fact that he is a great ironist and keen observer of human psychology, closer to Dickens and Fielding than one might initially believe. Yet what the generation of Romantic authors, who were overwhelmed by the discovery of Walter Scott, retained was primarily the historical and romantic tragedy, and the literary use of Scottish legends. Scott, like so many other great authors of English literature, is unfortunately reduced in France to a few novels. The greater part remains unpublished today, which makes this edition all the more valuable.

Second collected edition of Victor Hugo's works published by Furne after the Renduel edition of 1833-1836; it is illustrated with 35 steel engravings. Les contemplations published in 1856 (first edition with a mention of second edition) was added to this edition. The Furne edition spans from 1840 to 1846. Le Rhin indeed appears in first collected edition at this date.
This edition, originally published in installments, was verified and corrected by Hugo himself. It was initially intended to form only 12 volumes (which are most often found alone); volume 9 bis was added later where Ruy Blas is reprinted, and the 3 volumes of Le Rhin following. Furne had bought out the Renduel bookshop, the first publisher of Hugo's complete works from 1832 to 1840, as Hugo's writings then stood.
Contemporary half tawny shagreen binding. Spine with raised bands decorated with 4 fleurons in blind-tooled compartments. Gilt titles and volume numbers. Light traces of rubbing. Some pale scattered foxing on an overall very fresh set, on white paper, very attractive. The binder did not number the entire set, only the works occupying several volumes.
Handsome set, very homogeneous.
