Lettre d'un peintre Communard et portraitiste de Balzac : " Ah… si nous étions en 48 c'est-à-dire si j'avais 20 ans de moins"
        s. n.|20 floréal an 79 19 mai [19 mai 1871?]

Autograph letter signed and dated "20 floréal year 79 19 May" [19 May 1871?], 3 pages on a bifolium of blue paper. Small lack of paper affecting a few letters, usual folds from mailing.

Rare letter by painter and illustrator Gérard-Séguin, known for his portrait of Honoré de Balzac (Musée des Beaux-Arts de Tours). Written in the midst of the Paris Commune, as famine and fighting ravaged the capital, the artist delivers a desperate yet spirited plea from the artist.

This letter is one of the few surviving manuscripts by Gérard-Séguin whose biography remains largely unknown: "Little is known about the life and work of Jean Alfred Gérard-Séguin, except that he studied under Jérôme-Martin Langlois at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, exhibited at the Salon between 1831 and 1868, and—close to publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel—primarily worked as a book illustrator, contributing drawings for various publications, including Balzac's La Comédie Humaine, for which he also painted a portrait of the author. Working with Prosper Mérimée and the first Monuments Historiques commissions, he also copied out the church frescoes of Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe" (Musée de Valence). Staunch Republican Gérard-Seguin supported the Commune and had previously painted a major historical canvas on the French Revolution of 1848, depicting a "guardian of the peace and the Republic." Severely impoverished by the siege and already 67 years old, he expresses in this letter his regret at not being able to join the ranks of the Communard fighters.

Avons-nous en Indochine une politique indigène républicaine ? suivi de Le bolchévisme en Indochine
        s. n.|s. d. [1924]

Very rare first edition printed by the Bureaux de l'armée nationale (only two copies recorded in the CCF: ASOM and Nanterre).

        A pleasant copy.

The pamphlet brings together the texts of two lectures: the first delivered on 19 June 1924 in Hanoi, the second on 10 December 1924 in Paris; both advocate for a systematic effort to provide indigenous populations with access to education.

A former captain in the colonial artillery, Paul Monet (1884–1941) was then head of the Annamite Students' Residence in Hanoi. He would soon gain attention for echoing Roland Dorgelès' stance on the exploitation of indigenous labour by French companies (Les Jauniers, 1930).

First edition of the French translation, illustrated with 105 plates out of text (including 2 folding tables, 21 plans and maps, and 82 views and reproductions of documents). A remarkable record of one of the most significant instances of international opinion manipulation carried out by China and North Korea in the early stages of the Korean War: as early as 1952, North Korean and Chinese officials (including Zhou Enlai) accused the American army of using "insect vectors" on a large scale to spread various diseases among the populations of Korea and Manchuria (plague, cholera, etc.).

The entire operation had been meticulously staged, as definitively revealed by Soviet documents published in 1998.

Head and tail of spine with some losses, minor stains and marginal tears to the covers, two small holes to the lower edge of the rear board also affecting the rear endpaper, otherwise clean and sound throughout.

        Michel Lévy frères|1870

First edition, one of the rare copies on Holland paper, not mentioned in the printed justification.

Contemporary Bradel binding in half black morocco, smooth spine with gilt date at foot, cat's-eye paper-covered boards, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, binding signed Champs.

Inscribed and signed by Eugène Manuel to Madame Michel Lévy.

Our copy is enriched with two dated and signed autograph letters by Eugène Manuel, mounted on tabs at the beginning of the volume, most likely addressed to one of his literary mentors regarding the first performance of his play "Les ouvriers".

In the first letter, written with delicate modesty and dated the day before the premiere on 17 January 1870, Eugène Manuel expresses his hope and longing for the distinguished recipient to attend the opening of "Les ouvriers": "Vous prendrez peut-être plus d'intérêt à l'auteur, lorsque vous saurez que je suis le neveu d'un de vos amis d'autrefois, Jules Lévy, qui avait pour vous une bien vive et bien sincère affection... [...]

Autograph letter signed, addressed to his friend Thierry Maulnier, 26 lines in blue ink on letterhead of the Revue universelle, in which he urges him to contribute an article on André Gide's political stance.

Henri Massis, editor-in-chief of the journal, presses his friend: "Il me faudrait très rapidement votre prochaine chronique.

Rare example of this propaganda leaflet published by the Nazi Occupier, which became the most iconic image of the Resistance. This smaller version of the famous Affiche Rouge features the poster on the recto and a paragraph on the verso castigating « l'Armée du crime contre la France » ("the Army of Crime against France"). It opens with accusations against the « rêve mondial du complot juif » ("the global dream of the Jewish conspiracy") and claims that « si des Français sabotent, pillent et tuent (...) ce sont toujours des juifs qui les inspirent » ("if Frenchmen sabotage, loot, and kill (...) it is always Jews who inspire them").

Autograph manuscript by Louis Aragon, one page in blue ink on a leaf.

Precious study by Louis Aragon accompanying the serial publication in Les Lettres Françaises of Marceline Desbordes-Valmore's novel L'Atelier d'un peintre (1833). Aragon rehabilitates the female poet-novelist canceled from the history of literature and snubbed by Existentialists, placing her in the tradition of socialist realism.

        ***

Autograph manuscript by Louis Aragon, one page in blue ink on one leaf. Numerous crossed out words and rewritings. Slight rusting due to a paper clip, slight shadows of an ink transfer from another page. Published in Les Lettres Françaises, episode 16, 23 February 1950.
In 1949, Aragon chose to publish 'L'Atelier d'un peintre' serially with his own comments. The Cold War made socialist realism the official literary genre for Communist cultural policy: 'For Aragon, reading Marceline Desbordes-Valmore is above all reading the history of a generation, of a people. More precisely, he made Marceline an incarnation of the unfinished Republic, of a world still under construction, and one that was tending towards freedom. To understand Marceline, Aragon invites us to 'date her writings', and not be content to confine her to a single period of her life, but to try to find an explanation for her stances, which were as different as the regimes during the gestation of the Republic in the nineteenth century'. (Aghbarian, Lina, 'Aragon éditeur de Marceline Desbordes-Valmore', Recherches croisées Aragon - Elsa Triolet, no. 14).
Of all his comments accompanying 'L'Atelier d'un peintre', this is one of his most polemical: Aragon opposes the Surrealists by contesting Lautréamont's distate of the Romantics with whom Desbordes-Valmore was associated. The writer criticizes the hasty rejection of her work, which nevertheless has counterparts in modern literature: 'The Atelier that Aragon reopens with the publication of this novel, to rework it, to reveal it, to give it a second life closer to his own concerns, after having disentangled it from its time, and emptied it of its Romantic religiosity, to lay bare its richness, which lies in the feminist cause defended by Marceline Desbordes-Valmore [. ...] For her, Ondine, the literary character, was a transposition of the missing child, her son, the son of Henri de Latouche, her lover. Ondine is thus three times hybrid, androgynous, real and imaginary, daughter and mother at the same time, and Léonard, her inverted double, the one she would have liked to be in order to succeed in the forbidden world of painting. Aragon doubles androgyny with homosexuality, as seen in Yorick's phrase 'Talma doubles my existence'. Among other allusions, he refers to Henri Miller's Sexus [an allusion is made about this work in this manuscript] Aragon cultivates the theme of duality on which the whole novel is built. Without abandoning the imaginary world of the novel, he seeks to bring out the realistic side of this romantic novel, hidden in the shadow of the lyrical novel. In a word, Aragon reverses the order of the foreground and background: the romanticism of Marceline Desbordes-Valmore's novel becomes secondary, and the historical background takes precedence' (ibid.).

'We have now come to the night scene in the Place Vendôme, which is one of the most intense, the most beautiful minutes of the novel of the other century... I know that not everyone will agree. It's come to my attention that there are people who are superbly distracted from L'Atelier d'un peintre, and find it wrong that we should publish a story in which there is absolutely nothing of what THEY are looking for in novels, and it's possible that those who can't read only see a bluette, literature for young girls. Even if it is, it's as good as literature for old men!
But, finally, it has to be said, we are publishing here this masterpiece, deliberately ignored by those who write literary history, and which makes existentialist teeth grind, or simply spoilt teeth, as an example, sure that it will not be in vain.
Isidore Ducasse, Comte de Lautréamont, whose authority today's fashionable people would not dare challenge, condemned nearly eighty years ago those he called 'the Great Softheads' of Romanticism, those who wrote badly. But to this day, all literature written for the good is judged with contempt by this Medusa, the so-called elite, made up of very small soft heads. The revision of values announced by Ducasse has begun, whether he likes it or not. And right here.
The scene in Place Vendôme - for those of you who are just reading, not thinking whether it holds up next to Henry Miller's Sexus -, to better imagine it, what if we gave you a new image of Yorick Angelmann, its protagonist? What do you say to this portrait of a stranger [illustration chosen for this article], by Géricault, and which for similar reasons no doubt has been claimed to be this portrait of Lord Byron? which is very far from being proved.'

This first French edition of 'Das Kapital' was published in parts between 1872 and 1875, but met with no success, as the publisher writes in a letter to Marx dated 24 December 1873: "Sales are nil on your book (...). The print run is 1100 copies, almost all still in store". Unsold quires were partly reassembled and offered in bound paperback volumes in early 1876. As the book was barely finished, booksellers were already sabotaging distribution. In June 1879, La Châtre wrote to Marx:

"There are still three hundred copies left of the last parts, printed at a thousand copies. We would therefore have sold only 600 or 700 copies in a span of six years. It is a very sad result..."

This was a major disappointment for Karl Marx, who had put a great deal of effort into this French edition, the only translation he personally edited, and last one published in his lifetime.
Marx "wished to leave a mark with Le Capital in French theoretical and political debates, strongly influenced by the legacy of Proudhon, in a country where the International was more effectively organized than anywhere else, and whose capital had 'set itself up as a Commune'. In France, Le Capital was in a way the epilogue to a long theoretical and political debate begun in French twenty years earlier with the first polemic against Proudhon. (...) In 1872, Marx simultaneously corrected and revised Joseph Roy's translation and reworked the first German edition in preparation for the second edition published by Meissner. This twofold work constantly intersecting with each other, is partly responsible for the many differences that remain between German texts of the 2nd (and even later) editions and the French version, which Marx was correcting separately and simultaneously. At each stage of the process (preparation of the original text for Roy, correction of the proofs for Meissner, correction of the translation sent by Roy, correction of the proofs sent by the printer), Marx made changes, much to the despair of the printers. For many authors, this division of labor into different phases would result in a large number of small variants. For Marx, it encouraged a tendency that didn't need encouraging, the tendency to perpetual rewriting, to palimpsest." (Jean-Pierre Lefebvre, introduction to the 1983 reprint of Le Capital published by Editions Sociales).
On 28 April 1875, Karl Marx makes additions to a notice to the reader that would appear in the last issue, on p. 348, stating his involvement in this French version and its importance within his work:
"[M. J. Roy's scrupulous translation has] forced me to modify the wording, with the aim of making it more accessible to the reader. Since the book was published in separate parts, these changes were made one after the other, and were carried out with uneven attention to detail, resulting in stylistic discrepancies. Having once undertaken this revision work, I was led to apply it also to the substance of the original text (the second German edition), to simplify some developments, to complete others, to give additional historical or statistical material, to add critical insights, and so on. Whatever the literary imperfections of this French edition, it has a scientific value independent of the first edition and should be read even by readers familiar with the German language".
Our copy was undoubtedly acquired by a fellow countryman of Karl Marx, as it was bound at the time by a Zurich bookbinder, Schey & Co. In 1957, it was purchased by a bibliophile in Zagreb, in Tito's Yugoslavia, as evidenced by the marginalia on the title page.
Contemporary ownership inscription written three times: on the endpapers and both title pages.
A precious copy of the French edition, as important as the first in German.

Eclairez votre religion - Aux enfants rouges
        Bureau d'Éditions et de Diffusion|1932

        First edition.

Illustrated with 16 drawings by Georges Adam.

A superb copy of this rare booklet by Louis Aragon, a true "anti-clerical, anti-capitalist, anti-colonialist, anti-patriotic" (Pierre Juquin) catechism for the children of the exploited working masses.

"On June 25, 1932, the Imprimerie centrale completed printing for the Bureau des éditions et de diffusion, 132, Faubourg Saint-Denis, Paris, a beautiful pamphlet, now a bibliophilic rarity [...] On the cover, a large red star - an important and recurrent image in Aragon's work - appears imprinted on children's brains. Sixteen quatrains, droll and didactic, punctuated for ease of reading, alternate with drawings by Georges Adam, whose nearly expressionist mockery, reminiscent of Rouault's paintings, overturns taboos and myths." (Aragon. Un destin français 1897-1939)

After breaking with the Surrealists, Aragon threw himself wholeheartedly into the Journal de la lutte antireligieuse. He wrote this pamphlet from Moscow and published it on the Party's presses, to ignite the fervor of proletarian youth. French poet Jacques Prévert would later follow a similar path with his play Émasculée conception. Anticlerical activism within French Communist associations was in full swing at the time: every symbol and events of religious life were reinterpreted through the lens of class struggle. "Red baptisms" were organised, forming a community of "Godless" children (drawing their name from the Association of Godless Workers) who corresponded with their Soviet counterparts.
Aragon contributed to these new rituals with this particularly radical children's book, deemed excessively antipatriotic by Maurice Thorez, which he would later disavow at the end of his life.
