First edition

Michel de MONTAIGNE & Marie de GOURNAY Les Essais

Michel de MONTAIGNE & Marie de GOURNAY

Les Essais

Chez Jean Camusat, à Paris 1635, in-folio (22,5x36cm), (1f. front.) (1f. tit.) (2f. épître) (14f. préface) (2f. avis) (1f. tab.) 871pp. (1p. priv.) (11f. tab.) / [2], ã2, q2-q6, qq6, qqq6, A-Z6, AA-ZZ6, AAa-ZZz6, AAAa-EEEe6, FFFf4, relié.

Seventh Edition, partly original, published by Mademoiselle de Gournay after one of the two copies of corrected 1588 and annotated by Montaigne. The "daughter of alliance" of Montaigne particularly well this year by reviewing his preface to the edition of 1595, it has considerably increased.
This is the first edition where the translated quotes are placed next to the text. It is illustrated with a frontispiece, unreported, the first to present arms of Montaigne, bottom right, and the balance and its motto "What do I know." It is also the only edition in which the royal privilege is the complete text on the back of the last page of text, while others show only an excerpt.
Snack line with those of the National Library of Scotland and the British Library in Oxford.

Bound in full morocco vintage red, back with five nerves decorated with double gilt fillets, part of title blond morocco, double net gilded framing dishes. And a few scattered spots pale foxing, a small hole without missing the second layer of table and a marginal tear without missing page 681. Specimen with all margins.

Remarkable and important issue in the bibliography of essays, well established morocco vintage red. It is increased by more than a third according Brunet, compared to the published editions of living of Montaigne.
