Pierre GILLES De Constantinopoleo topographia lib. IV

Pierre GILLES

De Constantinopoleo topographia lib. IV

Ex officina Elzeviriana, Lugduni Batavorum (Leyde) 1632, In 24 (5,5x11cm), 422pp. (6), relié.

Elzevirienne edition of the text by Pierre Gilles. As a frontispiece representing a Roman column in the background with the Muslim city, a city map. Full vellum flap, Dutch binding. Smooth back with title pen dimmed. Pierre Gilles arrived in Constantinople in 1544 and meets glitzy city of Suleiman the Magnificent. Assistant to the transformation of the city, the inhabitants destroyed all antiques and evoking the old city, Pierre Gilles felt a duty to raise the topography of the city before it changes forever. However, foreign to Byzantine art, Gilles quickly pass this and especially focuses on the structure of the city.
