Claude Simon writes this letter to René Witzen to respond to an invitation to participate in a symposium at the Maison de la Culture in Bourges on the theme "Literature and Document". He expresses his refusal because he does not want to "accredit these kinds of companies". Indeed, according to him, "the burlesque coupling of these two words ( novel and document ) can not cover (just like the term cinema-truth ) a commercial object manufactured by relying on the inculture and the laziness of a naively eager public to "get information while being distracted", and where the mystified reader can find neither novel nor document.
