Jean-François MARMONTEL Contes moraux

Jean-François MARMONTEL

Contes moraux

Chez Merlin, à Paris 1765, In-12 (9,5x16,5cm), (8) 345pp. et (4) xvj, 376pp. et (6) 312pp., 3 tomes en 3 volumes reliés.

First illustrated edition of the charming suite of Gravelot. This edition also appeared in the format in-8.
The illustration includes a portrait by Cochin (engraved by Saint-Aubin), a frontispiece title of Gravelot engraved by Duclos and repeated in three volumes, and 23 figures by Gravelot (engraved by Baquoy, Legrand, Le Mire, of Longueil, Pasquier ...). "The figures of Gravelot are among the prettiest that this master has produced" (Cohen)
Binding in full marble stamped contemporary. Ornate smooth back. Title and tomato pieces in green morocco. Triple framing net on the boards. Gilded faded on the back of the volume 1. Rubbings, 2 blunt corners and a small hole in the tail of the volume 3. Good copy, with some scattered pale foxes.
According to the edition of this edition, there are two false titles in the first 2 volumes followed by the frontispieces, the third volume has a title page but no false title. See the copy of the Manchester University library or the Trinity college library in Dublin, where the snack is similar. It is not the same as the one with the errata sheets. The preface has by mistake been linked to the beginning of volume 2.
The tales of marmontel had a relatively long-lasting success and especially launched a vogue followed by many authors: La Dixmerie, Baculard d'Arnaud, Genlis, etc. In this way, it is in fact to exalt a virtue by means of a short narrative; after the accession of the eighteenth century, the genre would fall into youth literature since 1800. Marmontel played with the license, and his tales were condemned by the Sorbonne in 1768 for religious intolerance, for it is much less of a morality well-thinking of which it is a question, than that of the author. Moreover, under this name, the author only belatedly brought together the stories, tales and stories he had published in the Mercure de France in the past, and in fine, many tales do not correspond to the title.
