Signed book, First edition

André GIDE Les cahiers d'André Walter - Oeuvre posthume

André GIDE

Les cahiers d'André Walter - Oeuvre posthume

Librairie de l'Art Indépendant, Paris 1891, 12x16cm, relié.

First edition in trade, one of the 20 numbered copies on Japan, draw of head with 20 China.
The first edition, published by Perrin, was judged incorrect by André Gide and he had it destroyed destroyed, only about sixty copies of the press service escaped.
Binder in blue half-basane, back with four nerves adorned with golden floral motifs, marbled paper plates, guards and counterplates of paper to the vat, speckled slices, Contemporary binding.
Precious autograph signed by André Gide: A Albert Mockel because he asked for it (which is a flat lie). Andre Gide. I, the undersigned acknowledge (the lie) AW "on a first page of false title.
Second autographed autograph dedication of the author by André Gide, also to Albert Mockel, on another page of false title: "To Albert Mockel because he is my friend, His authentic André Gide".
An astonishing "double" copy on Japan, with two pages of false title, two pages of justification of the draw (No. 39 and 25 on 20 Japan numbered 21 to 40) and two title pages.
This peculiarity seems elucidated by this signed autograph letter of André Gide of three pages, addressed to Albert Mockel and mounted on tab after these duplicate pages, in which it seems that the dedicatee received from André Gide two autographed copies of this work and that he has placed the two dedications in the same copy astonishingly.
